How many porta potties does a construction site need in California?

A California construction site needs 1 toilet for every 20 workers of each sex under Cal/OSHA Title 8 §1526. A crew under 5 workers can share 1 all-gender toilet. Cal/OSHA also requires 1 washing station per 20 workers, set outside chemical toilets. Federal OSHA allows fewer, so California sites follow the state rule.

Legal minimums from Cal/OSHA §1526 and §1527. Your general contractor or safety plan may require more.
Crew on siteToilets (Cal/OSHA §1526)Wash stations (§1527)Federal OSHA for comparison
1–4 workers1 all-gender toiletNot required separately with 1 toilet1 toilet
5–20 men111 toilet
12 men + 6 women2 (1 per sex)11 toilet
35 men221 seat + 1 urinal
60 men + 10 women4 (3 + 1)42 seats + 2 urinals

Urinals can count toward the toilet total, but toilets must make up at least half. Our recommendation: add 1 unit above the legal minimum when crews work overtime or summer shifts, because tanks fill faster in Fontana heat. Read the full Cal/OSHA vs. OSHA jobsite toilet guide.

How often are jobsite porta potties cleaned?

Jobsite porta potties are cleaned once a week, and that weekly service is included in the 28-day price. Each visit pumps the tank, washes the interior, adds fresh deodorizer, and restocks toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Crews over 10 workers per unit, or summer sites, often add a second weekly service.

  • Service day is set when you book, so the tech arrives on a predictable day
  • Extra service visits can be added for inspections, walk-throughs or heat waves
  • Gate codes and lockbox notes are kept on file for every visit

How is a construction porta potty billed?

A construction porta potty is billed every 28 days, not by the calendar month. Each 28-day cycle includes the unit and weekly cleaning. Delivery is a one-time charge on the first invoice, so the first bill is higher than the rest. Billing stops when the unit is picked up.

Short jobs still bill one 28-day cycle, because the truck, the weekly service and the pickup cost the same for 3 days as for 3 weeks. Keep the unit as long as the job runs, then call for pickup. See typical numbers on the porta potty cost guide.

Where should a porta potty go on a jobsite?

Put a jobsite porta potty on level, firm ground the service truck can reach within about 25 feet. Keep it clear of trenches, crane swing paths, overhead lines and material drop zones. Face the door away from the street. On windy Fontana lots, the unit should be staked or strapped.

  • Pair a handwashing station with chemical toilets to meet §1527
  • Multi-story or crane jobs can ask for a high-rise unit lifted by crane
  • Road and utility crews that move daily do better with a towable porta potty trailer
  • Lockable units are available for weekend and night security

Running more than one site? We keep one account with separate delivery notes for each address. See warehouse and industrial restrooms for long-running plant and distribution-center setups.

Construction porta potty questions

Answers to questions renters ask us before they book.

Can you deliver a jobsite porta potty today?

Yes, when a truck is open. Call early in the day with the site address and gate details. A rush fee may apply and is shown on your quote. If today is booked, the unit goes out the next business day.

I only need a porta potty for 3 days of roofing. Do I still pay for a month?

Yes. Construction units bill one 28-day cycle as a minimum, because the delivery, cleaning and pickup cost the same for a short job. You can keep the unit for the whole cycle at no extra charge.

Is the price lower if I skip weekly cleaning?

No. Weekly service is part of every jobsite rental, because Cal/OSHA requires toilets to be kept clean and stocked. Skipping service does not lower the 28-day rate.

Do I need a separate handwashing station on my jobsite?

Yes, on most California jobsites. Cal/OSHA §1527 requires 1 washing station per 20 workers, set outside chemical toilets. The exception is a crew under 5 workers using 1 toilet.

Can the porta potty be locked at night?

Yes. You can add your own padlock to the unit's hasp, as long as it does not damage the door. Leave a key or code for the service tech so weekly cleaning is not missed.

Who is responsible if the unit is tipped or damaged on my site?

The renter is responsible for damage beyond normal use, including vandalism and tipping. Staking the unit and keeping it away from equipment paths prevents most problems. See our rental terms for details.
